It is a colorless and transparent liquid and serves as a powerful oxidizing agent. Its aqueous solution is used for medical wound disinfection, environmental sanitation, and food sterilization. Under normal conditions, hydrogen peroxide slowly decomposes into water and oxygen. The addition of a catalyst, such as manganese dioxide or exposure to shortwave radiation, can accelerate its reaction rate.
